Chad Feehan, who created the “Yellowstone” spinoff and ran its freshman season, has exited the show just as it wraps its record-breaking first run — and Benjamin Cavell, the mind behind “SEAL Team,” has officially stepped in to take the reins.

The timing raised eyebrows among fans, arriving only days before the Season 1 finale aired. According to Puck News, Feehan’s departure followed behind-the-scenes friction with stars Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly, along with other key figures on the production. Feehan remains credited as the show’s creator and an executive producer, but Cavell — whose resume also includes “Justified,” “Homeland,” and Stephen King adaptation “The Institute” — will now shape where Beth and Rip’s story goes next.

Hauser and Reilly addressed the change directly in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, choosing to frame it as simply part of the business. Hauser noted that this business is about adapting and that people move on, while Reilly emphasized how proud she was of the team’s work finishing the season together.

The shake-up comes at a strange moment for the show: “Dutton Ranch” became the biggest original series launch in Paramount+ history, and its cable premiere marked the network’s biggest debut in three years. A new showrunner for Season 2 hasn’t stopped the momentum — if anything, it’s added a new layer of intrigue to a franchise that has never been short on off-screen drama.
