The head of Nash County’s emergency services is dead after drowning on Saturday at a beach in Carteret County.
A procession was held on Sunday for the head of Nash County’s emergency services, a day after he drowned.
According to Nash County EMS, Dale Griffin, 60, died on Saturday. Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone confirmed that Griffin drowned at a beach in Carteret County.
WITN spoke to a Beaufort Public Information Specialist who said Griffin drowned near Shackleford Banks, and Beaufort Fire crews were the first to respond to the scene.
A procession began from Carteret Health Care on Sunday and ended at his home in Nash County.
Since the announcement of his death, tributes have been pouring in honoring Griffin. NC Rep. Allen Chesser, whose district covers part of Nash County, described Griffin as a leader, mentor and “a friend to so many.”
“My heart breaks for the Griffin family and our entire EMS and first responder community during this incredibly difficult time,” Chesser said.
Nash County posted a statement on Facebook that reads:
Dale was a dedicated EMS professional and an invaluable member of Nash County Emergency Services for many years. He was also a friend to all, someone whose commitment to serving others, leadership, and kindness made a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of working with him. Dale’s contributions to Nash County and the people he served will not be forgotten. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues, friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his career.
“Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of Dale Griffin, Nash County EMS Director. We also keep his EMS family in our hearts as they grieve this tremendous loss,” Nash County EMS said on Facebook.
