Long before Wicked became a global phenomenon and a blockbuster film franchise, Kristin Chenoweth helped bring one of Broadway’s most beloved characters to life.
On July 24, the Tony Award-winning actress and singer turns 58, marking another milestone in a career that has spanned Broadway, television, film and music.
While she’s built an impressive résumé over the past three decades, Chenoweth remains best known to many fans as the original Glinda the Good Witch in Wicked, the role she originated alongside Idina Menzel when the Stephen Schwartz musical premiered on Broadway in 2003.
Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, Wicked reimagines the story of The Wizard of Oz from the perspective of Elphaba and Glinda. Chenoweth’s bubbly, comedic performance as Glinda quickly became one of the production’s defining elements, earning her a Tony Award nomination and helping establish the musical as one of Broadway’s biggest modern successes.
More than 20 years later, Wicked remains one of the highest-grossing Broadway productions of all time, while Chenoweth’s original portrayal continues to influence every actress who has stepped into the role since.
Although Wicked introduced her to millions of theater fans, Chenoweth’s Broadway success began years earlier. In 1999, she won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, earning widespread acclaim for her scene-stealing performance as Sally Brown.
Outside the theater, Chenoweth has enjoyed a successful television career with memorable roles in Pushing Daisies, The West Wing, Glee and Schmigadoon!. Her performance in Pushing Daisies earned her an Emmy Award in 2009, further showcasing her versatility as both a comedic and dramatic performer.
She has also released multiple albums spanning Broadway standards, country and Christian music, while continuing to perform in concerts around the world.
