Jeremy Clarkson has revealed details about a medical experience that left him feeling he had endured “the very definition of misery.”
The Top Gear and The Grand Tour presenter recalled a peculiar episode from his adolescent years when, in a bid to address eczema, he was recommended to try a sunbed — an encounter that he describes as anything but soothing.
The 65-year-old, who has recently wrapped filming for series five of Amazon Prime’s Clarkson’s Farm, penned in his Sunday Times column about consulting his GP during his youth regarding the “irritating” skin complaint.
“As a teenager, I never once looked at my Breville toasted sandwich maker and wondered what it would be like to climb inside,” Clarkson penned.
“Which is why, when the newfangled sunbed reached these shores from Germany in about 1980, I had absolutely no desire to give it a whirl,” reports the Express.

“Annoyingly, however, I then developed eczema and was told by doctors that it might well be helped by a sunbed. So I stepped inside and discovered what I think is the very definition of misery.”
Clarkson painted the ordeal in stark, uncompromising terms:“You’re hot. That’s the first thing. And you’re sweating, so soon you can feel a little puddle forming at the top of your buttocks.
Which means you’re lying in your own bodily juices, and maybe the juices of the person who was in there before you, and you can’t move, and all the surfaces are hard, so you’re uncomfortable, and you can’t move, and you are Jane-Austen-bored.”
Clarkson has previously disclosed that he endured such a severe bout of the skin ailment that it once led to him being “hospitalised for two weeks.”
He explained that his skin had become so severely infected that he required to be “completely mummified” by medics in an attempt to address the distressing condition.

While the sunbed ordeal was disagreeable, Clarkson’s health battles didn’t conclude there.
In recent years, the motoring broadcaster has confronted more grave medical concerns, including a cardiac procedure he received in 2024 following a “sudden deterioration” in his wellbeing.
The Diddly Squat Farm proprietor revealed that he experienced symptoms of feeling “clammy,” a “tightness” in his chest, and “pins and needles” in his left arm upon returning from a holiday.
Clarkson has also grappled with other ongoing health challenges. He has spoken about weight variations, cholesterol worries, and the difficulties of sustaining a rigorous timetable whilst managing underlying ailments.
