“Blame this on the show”: Downfall of Game of Thrones Began in 1 Episode With a Daenerys Plot Hole So Huge Even Emilia Clarke Will be Terrified

This Daenerys plot hole from Game of Thrones Season 7 remains unresolved especially after one scene from the prequel series.

One infamous plot hole from Game of Thrones continues to linger in the minds of fans, especially after a conversation from House of the Dragon seemed to intensify it. This Daenerys Targaryen scene in question occurred in Season 7, Episode 6 entitled Beyond the Wall.

Many viewers had no problem watching the queen fly her dragons beyond the Wall to rescue Jon Snow, but after the publication of George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and the release of prequel’s Season 2, the scene seemed like an obvious mistake.

This Daenerys Plot Hole Got Even Worse After One House of the Dragon Scene

George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood revealed that during Queen Alysanne’s visit to the Wall, her dragon Silverwing refused to go beyond it. She attempted to fly the she-dragon three times but would not obey all the same. The queen figured out that this was a matter of grave concern as her dragon never disobeyed commands from her rider. She also noted how Silverwing started behaving erratically whenever they visited the Wall.

A scene from House of the Dragon seems to ensure that this was television canon after Cregan Stark told Jacaerys Velaryon the same story. Interestingly, the book only mentioned Silverwing who refused to cross the Wall. In the series, Vermithor also would not go beyond it.

This makes it clear that the dragons might have sensed something dangerous beyond the Wall, so Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys flying her dragons over it without struggle remained a mystery. The prequel series was expected to provide some sort of link to the events in the original show, but this revelation only gave proof that it could have been a major slip-up from the showrunners.

There are many possibilities as to why Game of Thrones allowed the scene to happen. Fire & Blood was not yet released during the season it premiered, and at this point, Martin was no longer involved with the series as he focused on his writing.

On Reddit, fans discussed the possible reasons as to why Daenerys’ dragons were able to cross the Wall. Some pointed out the absence of the prequel book at the time, while others put the blame on the showrunners for not knowing this information.

Seven years since the episode aired and we’re still clueless about this contradicting lore in the epic fantasy franchise. Hopefully, we get a clearer explanation in the upcoming season of House of the Dragon.

Game of Thrones is currently available to watch on HBO.
