“I just burst into tears like a complete idiot”: Emilia Clarke Couldn’t Hold Back Crying After Calling Game of Thrones Ending the ‘Metaphorical Undoing of the Bra’
Finishing Game of Thrones felt like removing a tight underwear for Emilia Clarke who played Daenerys Targaryen for eight seasons.
Emilia Clarke dedicated almost ten years of her life to Game of Thrones, and with such a long journey, it would be difficult to say goodbye to a character that became a part of one’s life. The ending of the show was, of course, a controversial one, but fans could never deny how the franchise also changed their lives.
Clarke portrayed Daenerys Targaryen, one of the most significant characters in the show and probably the role that she would be remembered for in her entire career. Dany was a joy to embody, but equally tough and challenging given her complicated nature, and according to the actress, the day they wrapped up filming for Season 8 felt like the relief of removing a tight undergarment.
Emilia Clarke Expressed Relief After Finishing Game Of Thrones
Shooting for Game of Thrones entailed long hours and unfavorable weather conditions. It also didn’t help that her costume was bulky and she had to wear a corset. Add these uncomfortable feelings to the strenuous tension on the set while trying to concentrate on delivering lines and you’ll get a really stressful experience.
Emilia Clarke did this for almost ten years. The show ran for eight seasons, and on the last day of shooting, she admitted feeling a sense of relief. She likened it to “the metaphorical undoing of the bra” via Harper’s Bazaar except that it took a decade before she could finally breathe.
It sounds like torture, but it wasn’t so bad at all. In fact, despite the grueling hours and physical discomfort, Clarke felt bittersweet the day they finished production. They had a little celebratory toast to the success of the show, and each of them gave a few speeches. The 37-year-old star confessed she only got three words in and was already sobbing. “I just burst into tears like a complete idiot,” she laughed.
Anyone would certainly feel the same way if they played a figure so dearly beloved by fans. Daenerys has become a pop culture icon that will always be associated with dragons and fierce female leaders. It was also the role that earned Clarke four Primetime Emmy nominations.
Emilia Clarke’s Heartfelt Message On Leaving Game Of Thrones
Clarke dedicated a farewell post on Instagram where she paid tribute to Daenerys Targaryen and the whole cast of the show. “The mother of dragons chapter has taken up the whole of my adult life,” she wrote. The actress was 23 when she joined the project in 2010.
Despite the many struggles she braved performing the most daunting tasks as the Khaleesi, she owed her development as an actor, a woman, and a person from the series. Lastly, she thanked the fans for their unwavering support and for cheering Daenerys on as the rightful heir to the throne. The actress ended her post with the iconic line: “And now our watch has ended”.
