“It’s weird to see your father make out with another woman”: Emilia Clarke Might Never Watch House of the Dragon But Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Took it a Step Further With Game of Thrones

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau revealed why his family cannot watch Game of Thrones while Emilia Clarke wants to avoid House of the Dragon at all costs.

Game of Thrones became one of the most-watched shows on television during its run on HBO. However, the series was also notorious for its explicit scenes that might make some viewers uncomfortable. The trend has continued with the spin-off/prequel series House of the Dragon, featuring similarly explicit moments between characters.

During an interview, Emilia Clarke refused to watch the spin-off series, sharing a simple reason for distancing herself from it. However, Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau took things further by not allowing his family to watch the hit fantasy-drama series. Given the show’s explicit nature, the actor’s sentiments are understandable, and here is what he had to say.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Revealed Why His Family Isn’t Allowed to Watch Game of Thrones

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau played the role of Jaime Lannister in the HBO fantasy drama series Game of Thrones. For his performance in the series, the actor received two Emmy nominations. However, Coster-Waldau’s character is infamous for his incestuous relationship with his sister, Cersei Lannister, played by Lena Headey.

During a 2016 interview with the New York Post, Coster-Waldau revealed that he and his family did not watch the series. Moreover, his daughters weren’t allowed to watch the series. He said:

For my kids, it’s just weird to see your dad pretend to be someone else. It’s weird to see your father make out with another woman. It’s not cool.

The actor added that his wife also did not prefer watching the series, further hinting that the show’s explicit nature made it unsuitable for a family watch.

Coster-Waldau married actress Nukâka in 1998 and the couple has two daughters, Philippa and Safina. At the time of the interview, the couple’s daughters were still in their early teenage years. Therefore, it is understandable that Coster-Waldau did not want to expose them to such mature content, thereby forbidding them from watching Game of Thrones.

Emilia Clarke Refused to Watch House of the Dragon For One Simple Reason

While Coster-Waldau’s family was the reason he did not watch the fantasy drama, his co-star Emilia Clarke had an entirely different reason for not watching its spin-off House of the Dragon. Clarke played the role of Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones but refused to watch the prequel.

During an interview with Variety, the actress was asked whether she was following the spin-off series, which debuted to critical acclaim and impressive viewership numbers.

I just can’t do it. It’s so weird. It’s so strange. It’s kind of like someone saying, ‘You want to go to this school reunion that’s not your year?

Clarke made the above statement, implying that she would not watch the prequel since none of her castmates from the parent series were in it.

Therefore, the actress admitted that she was avoiding the spin-off, which was set in the same universe but technically took place decades before her character’s story. Nonetheless, Clarke has a brief uncredited cameo in the show’s season 2 finale. Daenerys appears in Daemon Targaryen’s visions at Harrenhal, though a different actress played her this time.

Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are streaming on Max.
